There is an interesting parallel here in that in 1945 when Belsen was
taken over by the British army there were thousands of female
inmates who had been starved for many months with average
weights below 60 lbs. After they had been medically treated and had
become accustomed gradually to a proper diet they obviously
started to put on weight. Shortly afterwards many of them became
pregnant and a lot of babies were born in the Belsen hospital. At the
time this was recognised as an inbuilt survival trait from our ancestral
past.
