Subject: [ferrethealth] ADV TEST COSTS???
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Prices are going to vary by area and practice.
The ADV test price I have heard up to $85 and that is because the local vets send it to the lab, that is the lab fees- the lab then sends it out to the place to ADV test.
MY advice, you can have the vet draw the blood, you can send it directly for the ADV test and pay the $10 per test with Dr. Blau at Blue Cross Animal Hospital or whatever Avecon charges for their test. If you are sending the test and getting blood, I recommend using Dr. Blau ( he bought the tests from United when they closed and does the CEP test for ADV).
The test can be run on as little blood as 3/4 capillary tube, I usually send two just in case one breaks and can get enough from clipping a nail short. So if the vet can't get the blood, can clip the nail for you. Or just needs a little if drawing it.

The Heartworm test sounds right.

I just made an appointment with my local vet for my 3 Ohio girls ( couldn't get into the really good one 2 hours away for a couple weeks). The local vet (who I see for simple stuff usually-- like shots and quick exams) wants $70 each ferret to ADV test and and additional $15 for heartworm.. this doesn't include a touch of gas if they need to sedate them-- that's an extra $30 --

my question is-- am I crazy or are these prices out of line.. The other vet is only charging $50 to spay-- how can a blood test cost more than surgery.?

Lisa
