To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

When discussing costs there are two things that are sorely needed for
the discussion to have any meaning.

1. It is important to say in GENERAL WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED. In areas
such as where Steve and I live land and tax costs are about 6 times
what they are where his parents live. The upshot is that all other
costs which have to have those expenses built in are much higher
here. That includes labor, repairs, contractors, all employees,
cleaning services, etc. Obviously, all services are much more
expensive here than they are there.

When people try to compare cost across regions, let along across the
entire country or internationally, total chaos results because it
just is not feasible. That is why it is usually best to compare
costs among local ferret club members.

If you live in NYC or San Diego and get a reply from Powell or
Gillette in WY their information is really NOT going to apply to your
situation, but those folks in Wyoming certainly can usefully share
their info with each other.

2. When there are multiple options it pays to say which one is being
used. For example, there are several types of ADV tests but some are
more prone to errors than others, and some do not show quiet
infections. The Quick Test which is done at home has the most room
for error. Send away tests are PCR, Elisa, or CIEP (also called
CEP). PCR checks for the presence of the actual virus DNA in bodily
fluids. When the virus is in fluids it is potentially contagious.
Elisa and CIEP each look for indicators of antibodies to ADV which
indicates an exposure but more often indicates an infection.
