Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] when to start diazoxide treatment for insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi Anita,
I would consider getting a second opinion... insulinoma isnt measured by whether or not the ferret is losing any weight, its measured by their glucose level & other clinical signs (which you say he is acting lethargic & staying in bed) A glucose reading in the 30's is low. Thats *really* low. I'm not positive, but I believe thats borderline on having a seizure.
If the vet doesnt want to add in diazoxide yet, it may be possible to increase the dose of the Pred, if the Pred is not at a high level.
If this vet doesnt want to do anything now to increase the pred or add in the diazoxide, I'd get a second opinion. You really dont want Levi to get a seizure.

I need to know at what point it is recommended to add the Diazoxide
with the prednisone for treating insulinoma... and what dosage you
would start out at. My Levi weighs 1400gms and his blood sugar is now
staying in the 30s. My vet has not suggested adding it yet. She says
he is doing well because he has not lost any weight yet. But he is
really starting to play a lot less and he wants to always stay in
bed. thanks for any advice, Anita
