Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: when to start diazoxide treatment for insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

His blood sugars are in the 30's?!! You need a second opinion. My Indy had insilinoma and
when his blood sugar drops to the 30's, he went into hypoglycemic shock. We took him
into the emergency vet clinic and they revived him and put him on prednisone (and if you
hadn't noticed, they put ferrets on prednisone for everything! too much of it will cause
ulcers) Indy was fine for a month, he was on a special diet and all, but his blood sugar
dropped to the 30's again and he went into shock. I ran him to his vet, they revived him,
but the shock had caused too much brain damage and he had lost his equilibrium (He
didn't know which was up or down and so on) So I had to make the difficult decision to put
him to sleep since his blood sugar kept dropping. Right now, I have one of my younger
ferrets who shows signs of blood sugar problems on Panc'rse & Glucobalance by Azmira's
Holistic Animal Care (azmira.com) Its a herbal remedy and it is one drop per 5 pounds
diluted in a small amount of warm water 3-4 times a day. It works for my buddy and
consult with your vet because it might work with your guy too. Another thing to
remember, if you little guy goes into shock or you notice that his blood sugar is getting
way to low, take a syringe and drop corn syrup onto his tongue. Wait a couple minutes and
repeat as needed but be careful not to give him too much. This will bring his sugar level
up enough on the way to the vet to either keep the shock on a minimum or prevent it
entirely.
