According to the pharmacy at the animal hospital I go to, there is a two hour window with prednisone (i.e., it doesn't expire at precisely 8 hours, but starts declining around 7 hours and is done around 9 hours). So from what I've been told, what you are proposing should be effective.

I was also told by my vet that you can keep pushing the dosage of pred up as long as you see improvement and that the upper limit is more of a guideline than a hard and fast limit. However, even though ferrets are supposed to tolerate pred comparatively well, I have seen ulcers develop in each of my ferrets who has been on high doses of pred long term for insulinoma or lymphoma, so that's something to consider. I had very good luck with diazoxide in one ferret, it gave her another good six months after pred lost its effectiveness. I'm sorry I don't remember the dosage, it was about six years ago.

Regina
