Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Prednisone Questions!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello,

I have a 7yo male recently diagnosed with lymphoma. He appears to be
perfectly healthy and the disease has only been discovered due to a non-
related surgery (stomach hairball) so a few different body biopsies
were done.

Yesterday we decided not to have him into chemo because we might not be
able to follow the complete protocol (maybe not all drugs are readily
available here) and to keep his life quality, as he gets very stressed
about medical procedures.

So today vet only prescribed 0,6ml of pred once a day. Ferret is about
1,7lb, so this is close to the dosage Dr. Williams reccomends at
http://www.afip.org/ferrets/lsa.html. I realize lymphoma has to be
treated immediately, but on this very same homepage Dr. Williams says
that "A protocol consisting of prednisone at 1 mg/kg PO SID will cause
initial clinical improvement and a marked decrease in the size of
peripheral nodes, but the vast majority of these animals will return
within 4-6 weeks with disseminated disease which is refractory to
further prednisone treatment".

With all this in mind, my question is: as the ferret is doing really,
really fine right now, should I wait or should I start giving him pred
immediately?

Also he has insulinoma, discovered on this same surgery, but never had
any symptom. His last blood sugar dosage was 50.

Thanks a lot in advance, for your precious help
Alessandra
