Subject: [ferrethealth] DMK heat followup: "stimulate"?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Thanks to all for your help. It sounds like the timing of this heat is off, but that sure is
what it looks like. (The swelling came up pretty quickly, and looks puffy, pink, and slightly
moist. Also, she's extremely mellow, epecially for a young ferret. Don't know whether
that's related or not.)

I called several vets in my area (one who work with intact ferrets from a nearby breeder)
and none were willing to give a shot of any kind to bring Maryanne out of heat. They say
it's risky. Has anyone heard of this? They were vague about the side effects, but one
mentioned infections.

The vet who deals with intact ferrets offered to "stimulate" Maryanne to "mimic" the
breeding process, and also gave me instructions to do this myself, if I want to try. After I
finished hooting, I asked: It's exactly what it sounds like, and involves KY jelly and a q-tip.
Has anyone ever done this? Maryanne does have a spay appointment for Nov. 6th, but
she's really unhappy about being isolated, so I'm tempted to try this to bring her out of
heat sooner. It does make me a bit nervous, but I suppose if I give shots and massage anal
glands I can do this too. Any recommendations?
