I absolutely HAD to respond to the part about no pain medications. I am an LVT with a specialty (VTS- veterinary technician specialty) in anesthesia. My passion with anesthesia is especially true with regards to pain medication. There is NO surgery that should not be followed with pain medicaion. Many animals do not vocalize when in pain but there are other signs if you look for them. It is proven that it takes longer for animals ( and humans) to heal when they are in pain. It is a huge strain on the body. My favorite to use in ferrets ( and cats) is called buprenorphine or Buprinex. It is easy to give at home because it can be given orally. You place the liquid into the cheek pouch where it is absorbed by the body. I dose it every 6 hours. It doesn't make them overly sedate, but relieves the pain enough so that they can sleep. I don't like butorphanol or Torb as it seems to heavily sedate them and only lasts about an hour. Remember that YOU are your ferrets advocate. The cannot speak for themselves so INSIST that your vet sends home pain meds. Even if you are not sure if they will be in pain or not....err on the side of giving pain medications. You would insist on medications if it was you! Can you imagine a human male getting castrated and not getting anything for pain!!!! After all, it is just a neuter!!! If my abdomen was opened up and my uterus stretched out then removed....you better believe I would want pain medication. Not just for that day at the time of surgery....I would want it for 3-4 days!!! Be compassionate and your babies will thank you.

If there could be pain, GIVE DRUGS!
If there might be pain, GIVE DRUGS!
If you would be painful, GIVE DRUGS!
If there is pain.....GIVE DRUGS!!!!!
