Subject: [ferrethealth] insulinoma question
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I would definitely consider surgery for early insulinoma diagnosis. Even taking out part of the pancreas and not just the large nodule once in surgery since there can be very small insulinomas that are not visible on ultrasound and may be found while in surgery. I would also have the vet check the adrenals while in, because it is common to find early adrenal gland disease at your ferrets age and this can be taken care of as well.

THe initial diagnosis was based on one reading of 68 and no symptoms? Or average, meaning he ran lower at times? Was having symptoms?
IF the nodule is noticeable on the ultrasound I would feel pretty confident in surgery even with no symptoms because the insulinoma may not be symptomatic for some time. I have had a few in for adrenal and the vet found some pancreas nodules and removed them at the time in a ferret that had no symptoms yet.

When possible, I think surgery is a good option while the ferret is still in good health and good weight. The recovery should be easier and less complicated. Surgery is not an emergency and can wait until you can discuss with your vet your concerns and consider any other options.

Good luck to River.

==============================

Hi everyone,
My 5 yo male ferret River, was diagnosed w/ insulinoma a few months back. His glucose was averaging 68, so he was put on Prednisolone (5mg/5ml), .75ml twice a day. After he started the Pred, his levels went up to 90. I also had an ultrasound done on him, in which they could see 1 noticable nodule.

Now, I know that surgery is the best option for him, and he is scheduled for surgery next week.

But, surgery always makes me nervous... so I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.. but should I wait on the surgery because it doesnt seem that bad to me, or am I doing the right thing here and getting the surgery done quickly?

Thanks all for any advice or info!
Andrea and River
