Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Vulva infection, vinegar water
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I don't know why yet. I pointed out Basil's enlarged vulva (about 7 mm
in diameter) when she was about a year old and I told the vet it
fluctuates. The vet looked at it and said it was in the realm of
normal but it shouldn't fluctuate. It went down after that but has
always been a tiny bit larger than my other 2 ferrets'.

I noticed it again about 5 weeks ago. Basil will soon be 3 yrs. old.
We brought her to the vet last week because I could see a bit of dried
discharge. She shows no other symptoms in the direction of heat or
adrenal. Her gums are pink and she has no hair loss anywhere. She's
her usual active self, eats and poops normally.

The vet said her vulva isn't as big as she usually sees with adrenal,
that Basil's adrenal glands aren't enlarged, and her coat is
beautiful. The vet wasn't concerned about infection but said I could
start antibiotics if I wanted to. I'm the type that avoids medications
unless it's the only solution so I didn't ask for them.

We pulled blood for an adrenal panel, which the vet also said
sometimes doesn't show the disease but that at least we'd have a
baseline. So now it seems all I can do is wait 2 more weeks.

That night when I got home I saw a tiny ball of actual puss from the
vulva and came across the vinegar water method for cleaning it. Then I
researched vinegar water in general and found a lot of info on it's
natural cleaning and healing properties. And that's where I'm at for now.
