surgery. He's freeroam, but he is in the ferret room at nite, with a
cage in there but with the door always open. So he's not used to being
confined to a cage. With his upcoming surgery, I'm wondering how I
should limit his activity?

How old is River? Chances are that he won't feel much like doing alot
for a couple of days. I had cancer removed from my 2 1/2 year old
ferret and she was not up and about for at least a week. Before his
surgery let him do all the normal things, maybe even lock him in his
cage at night so he can at least get used to it. Chanes are though,
that he will not appreciate it. (Be strong):). It is really hard to do
to your fuzzy but it will help.

anything that he could climb on/in? Or would that give him too much
space to walk around in? Should he be in a one story cage w/ pain meds
that will keep him sleepy? I would greatly appreciate any advice
anyone has on what they do for their free-roamers?

If you have a one story cage that would be great. I kept my ferret in a
HUGE pet carrier at the time, because i have other ferrets. He needs
lots of rest after the surgery. After a day or two, if you see some
improvement, then supervise a little bit of out time, and then just
gradually increase it. Too much activity or stress to early can make
things worse. My ferret projectile vomited when i took her fo a post-
surgery check up due to a idiotic barking dog.

The best thing you can do (if your vet if ferret saavy) is follow the
direcions exactly that he or she gives you. If you do not feel like
your vet has told you to do the right thing, then just contact yahoo
groups again. Chances are you will get some pretty specific
instructions from the vet.

Hope i was of some help,
