To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

The vaginal environment is normally mildly acidic
and has its own bacterial flora. When another
bacterium such as E. coli proliferates the pH tends
to become more alkaline which further promotes
growth of the wrong bacteria, loss of the good
bacteria, and tissue irritation.

The types of bacteria mentioned below are in
relation to human health but at least part of it
probably carries over to some degree:

Irrigation with a mildly acidic solution washes
away some of the invaders and helps the needed
bacteria by returning the normal pH. This can
also be done with plain yogurt which also
introduces Lactobacilis which can be useful, for
instance, if there is a proliferation some normal
vaginal bacteria that need to remain in small
numbers such as Betahemolytic Strep.

Both of those are old-timey human health measures
which -- if they are not over-done -- are still
advocated by some physicians but most people don't
use them because of mess and because there so often
is STILL need of an antibiotic.

The difficulty is that ferrets almost never get vaginal
infections without something else underlying that:
stump pyometra, adrenal disease, etc. So, you might
beat the odds, or you might the same situation recurring
if there is an underlying health problem.
