Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal disease causing hyperactivity?
To: FHL <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I've been searching the archives and read Dr. Williams adrenal disease
article and looked on Mike Janke's adrenal disease/ insulinoma ferret
health care pages. I've got a 7 year old male neutered ferret, Bobby,
who first showed adrenal symptoms just over a year ago. His coat was
sparse, he had the pot belly appearance but the main symptom was the
restlessness and hyperactivity. I started him on 1.5 mg melatonin and
the restlessness stopped within a week. It's been working fine all this
time but within the last month he has become restless again. When he is
in his cage, he will bite at the cage door and dig the floor up and he
wants to be out of his cage desperately but once he is out, he has a
little run and retires to one of the beds. When I put him back in his
cage, he acts restless again and paces in his cage. How common is this
with adrenal disease? I read in Dr Kemmerer Cottrell's article that
"most adrenal tumors involve the area of the adrenal gland that produces
sex hormones, although tumors that produce cortisol or epinephrine do
occasionally occur." Could Bobby have a tumour that produces
epinephrine? Could that cause a heart murmur? Bobby has that and also
had fluid in his lungs so he was put on Benazepril 2 weeks ago. No more
fluid in his lungs so he doesn't need the Furosemide.

He was also put on a low dose of prednisolone (0.25 - 0.33 mg twice a
day) back in June because he showed symptoms of low blood glucose (and
had a few readings at around 60 mg/dl) and he started to grow a new coat
within a week or two of getting the pred. He now only has a small bold
patch on his back at the base of his tail. (He still has the pot belly
appearance but has also lost weight with his recent hyperactivity.)

I just don't know what to do now, would Suprelorin work if the
epinephrine is overproduced? I can't get Lupron, seems the Professional
Arts Pharmacy don't ship medications abroad anymore...
