People tend to turn to alternative therapies because
they assume they will be safer, but what has been
seen with a number are:
1. That careful and controlled testing to show actual
effectiveness is lacking
2. That doses are variable
3. That content is variable; in the U.S. many of the
oriental herbal meds imported have been recalled for
containing actual drugs, in some cases ones no longer
allowed in the U.S. due to being too dangerous.

4. That there are no safety or effectiveness studies in
the target animals, in this case in ferrets
5. There are hundreds if not thousands of natural poisons.
(I suspect it probably is in the thousands.) There are
always some who assume that natural means safe, but
there are books and books about situations where that is
not the case.

Now, I am not saying that there are not useful alternative
approaches for ferrets; heck, some like melatonin or Co
10Q can be so useful that they are mainstream now.

Nor am I saying that there has been no testing. I can't
spring for the 4 figures for the European Commission work
but I have gotten the 3 figure latest issues of the _PDR for
Herbal Medicines_, and the _PDR for Supplements_ when they
have come out as well as other resources, and I applaud the
on-going careful work.

What I am saying is that people have to be careful to
recognize the possible shortfalls and possible risks,
especially in relation to the care of animals who have not
been tested carefully with the meds (true for any type where
that applies) and always remember that grain of salt! A bit of
skepticism toward those things still untested appropriately,
***** or even just a plain old realistic attitude that everything
has downsides ***** can be of great help if an unpleasant and
unexpected downturn occurs. So, each of us should always
read the bad as well as the good about anything, and never
put so much faith into anything that any of us is incapable of
noticing or admitting to things that go wrong when they
happen or deaths could occur -- and in relation to some other
things in the category where faith can suborn what good sense
otherwise would have tackled appropriately and saved critters...
