Subject: [ferrethealth] doxorubicin question
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I read this from another insulinoma thread:

And in part of that it states:

>Doxorubicin is a potent chemo drug, but it also has some
>potential serious side effects (ie damage to
>the heart).

My ferret River had been on a protocol of doxorubicin (back in Feb '07 - Apr '07), and I was told of the potential side effects of heart damage, so I had done a number of chest xrays throughout this protocol to make sure everything was ok with his heart (in which it was).

But now that River had been scheduled for a pancreatectomy last week, we had done the presurgical bloodwork (came back fine), and another chest xray... and the vet advised to hold off on the surgery because she saw something on the heart xray that looked like fluid near the top of his heart. So as of right now, he's scheduled for an echo-cardiogram (sp??).

So, like I said, while I realized the potential heart damage from the doxorubicin, I was under the impression that this would show up immediately. Does anyone know if the doxorubicin did cause any heart damage - would this damage show up immediately, or rather months later down the line?
Thanks,
Andrea
