Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Depo-Medrol for treating insulinoma?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We used Depo-Medrol injections to treat insulinoma in one ferret for
nearly 2 years successfully. Our ferret (Moon) was non-responsive to
prednisone and prednisolone in even the highest doses, and our vet at
the time offered that Depo-Medrol had been used successfully in cats,
I believe. Interestingly, she too had been adrenal, and had
successful surgery to remove her left adrenal gland, but had pulled
through that operation a couple of years before the insulinoma
developed.

In any event, we started with a "middle-of-the-road" dosage (I've no
idea what it was....it was too long ago) and proceeded to gradually
reduce both the dosage and the frequency of injections from every 2
weeks to every 5-6 weeks. We got very good at detecting when it was
about time for another shot.

Our vet told us to expect a maximum of 6 months. Moon survived
another 2 years on the injections. She definitely developed the "pred
belly" and her hair thinned considerably over time, but was actually
fairly active and very comfortable until the very end.

We also tried Depo-Medrol injections on a ferret who'd had insulinoma
surgery (nodules removed) and still had low glucose levels.
Prednisone and prednisolone both didn't work in him either, but
unfortunately neither did Depo-Medrol. He passed away a short 3
months after his surgery.

So, I can certainly vouch that in one situation it worked well, but it
is certainly not a certainty.
