Glucose readings at the time
(back in September) were in the 30's. My vet decided, for whatever
reason, that he wanted to try the Depo-Medrol and, so far, it does
appear to be working. I am just curious as to why, if it is an
effective treatment, it isn't more commonly used.
**Well, the reason that I don't use it (and that I suspect most of my
colleagues don't) is that depot injections are very hard to control as far as daily
dose rate goes. I have certainly used oral methylprednisolone (the active
ingredient in Depo-Medrol) to control insulinoma in the past. I find that it is
much easier to be able to adjust dosing and control blood glucose levels by
using oral medications rather than injectable. The only advantage to using
injectable pred would be to help reduce gastric irritation, IMO, which I find easy
enough to do as long as the ferret gets food along with the medication.**
