Subject: [ferrethealth] What might cause extreme thirst post-surgically?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
My 1 1/2 year-old male underwent surgery on Monday for a suspected
obstruction. No obstruction was found during surgery, however, he
passed an extremely large compacted hairball the next day and another
the day after. The vet did "milk" his intestinal tract but did not
cut into it. He thinks this may have caused the obstruction to move
into the colon. He did not bounce back as quickly as expected from the
surgery. I spoke with the vet yesterday because he seemed abnormally
lethargic. The vet suggested I try some Ferretvite to boost his
energy. It worked and he was more active and started eating normally.
However, today he has been drinking almost non-stop, which is a bit
alarming. He is also losing weight. Now he was almost 4 lbs going
into the surgery. I had expressed concern over his size a couple of
months ago - but was assured by the vet that he seemed healthy and not
to worry. He did have a full blood panel pre-surgically and results
were normal. The vet checked all major organs as well when he went in
and said everything appeared normal. What might be causing this
thirst? The clinic doesn't open until Monday. Is there anything I
should or can do until I get him in?
