**I respectfully disagree with this. In my experience it is fairly easy to=
get a jugular or cephalic venipuncture on most awake ferrets, and I rarely=
anesthetize them for those routes, unless I am going to do a cutdown to the=
vein
for the purpose of placing a catheter (which is the only reason I've ever d=
one
a cutdown) or to draw a significant amount of blood (for a transfusion, etc=
).
I usually don't use the saphenous unless I am anesthetizing them, though, a=
s
they tend to be more squirmy for me about the back legs.
I've drawn blood pretty easily on awake rabbits and guinea pigs as well,
although not rats. I'm allergic to rats, though, so don't see too many of t=
hem.
It may be due to the difference between bloodlines or handling techniques,=
although a fair number of my ferret patients are privately bred with Europe=
an
bloodlines in their pedigrees.**
