Subject: [ferrethealth] Update on sick ferret, not peeing
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I got up this morning to watch him and he was straining again but
this time was peeing a few drops. My husband took him to the vets as
soon as they opened. The knowledgeable vet I spoke to last night was
not there he had someone filling in. They emptyed his badder and
tested his urine. There was trace amonts of blood in his urine. He
said it was either a UTI or kidney stones and prescribed amoxicillin.
He also said to change his diet to Iams wet cat food. My husband
didn't ask enough questions/the vet was not that helpful so I will be
calling the other vet tomorrow and finding out some answers. For now
maybe you all can help - We have him and his brother on Zupreem. They
have only been on it a few months. They were eating 8 in 1 Ultimate
ferret diet which they loved and were doing great on but you can't
find it anywhere nearby so we had to switch. They don't like the new
stuff so much. I noticed some changes - they have lost some weight,
but I thought it was depression because they lost their buddy, my
white ferret has started to go yellow, and now this. I am assuming
it's the food that has been the problem. The vet. didn't say weather
the urine was acid or akaline but I checked and Iams is lower protien
so maybe he did test it and just didn't say (this would be the thing
to do if it's stones though, would the food cause a UTI?). He did not
say how long to feed him the cat food (I thought ferrets were not
supposed to eat cat food?)or how we would know if the meds were
working, or what to do if they seemed like they weren't - meaning he
has stones. My hubby said the vet. said we would just have to let
them pass then go from there.
