I keep reading that struvite stones are also usually caused by
certain types of bacteria.
Perhaps discuss with your vet a run of antibiotics indicated for
urinary tract infections, maybe a sub-q session, maybe even a
dental.
I wonder if it's possible the kidney damage is acute because of the
stones and infection, not chronic. How high are the BUN/creatinine?
I also belong to a Feline CRF Yahoo group. The management of severe
CRF in cats includes the use of an Aluminum Hydroxide phosphorus
binder, high moisture diet and daily sub-q fluids. Aluminum
Hydroxide is used because at least in cats it is much rarer to have
aluminum toxicity than the hypercalcemia that accompanies a calcium
binder. Royal Canin SO uses calcium carbonate.
As far as diet for now if the numbers aren't that high, I would use
a high QUALITY high protein diet with adequate moisture intake.
Hydration is very important. If the ferret will eat the dry food
mixed with warm water as a soup that would be great. From what you
have on hand I like the EVO and Zupreem. EVO probably has the
highest quality protein ingredients and amount of vitamins/minerals.
The Zupreem doesn't use byproduct and it has Flax for Omega 3.
Totally ferret doesn't use byproduct but it has rice, corn, potato,
barley and millet, I'm not sure why all the cereal. I like 8in1 too
but it has raisin juice so maybe not with kidney issues. We mostly
use Wysong Archetypal 1 which is almost all meat and they LOVE as a
soup. But they also like 8in1 dry so we use it because variety is
also very important in any diet.
The meat protein source will lower urine pH will which help in the
case of struvite stones. A more alkaline pH aids the bacterial
infection in thriving and forming those stones. The amino acids from
the protein and the vitamins/minerals are important for cell
regeneration, including kidney cells. And Omega 3 aids in fighting
inflammation so supplementing that would be a great help to the
kidneys also.
