Subject: [ferrethealth] prozac
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'm not one to use mood changing drugs easily. I prefer natural
treatments such as melatonin, scented candles, calming salves, etc.
Some have had good response with Bach Rescue Rememdy.

I did discover that a spritz of bactine spray on the back of the neck
helps to deter others from grabbing there.

We tried Sully on prozac for about 2.5 weeks but for him it didn't stop
the aggression. At times it seemed he was a bit less intense with
aggression and at others angrier. I noticed at one point he acted like
he had a headache, eyes scrunched, head turned a bit - so I lowered his
dosage a bit, then took it back up in increments.

Currently we are trying Sully and two others on neurontin and lupron for
aggression issues - not with me but with other ferrets. For a time I
took neurontin for the electrical shocks that were running around my
ribs and chest and noticed that it also had an overall calming effect
on me so I talked to our vet about it, he researched it and we decided
to give it a try.

Sully isn't a Marshall ferret, has an odd odor, and is a different body
shape than Canadians and Denmarks - Sully is long and lean and very
tough. He was o.k. with our household for 1.5 yrs till Dante my
Denmark came into season. Sully's attitude towards other ferrets makes
the Canadians and Denmarks look like angels, though Sully does ignores
80% of the ferrets in our home. Sully has friends and followers,
Dante, Dippy and Onyx love Sully very much and they are caged together
when I'm away from home and when they bully others. Sully does play,
if you can call it that, roughly, with Dante and he will play nicely
with me. He isn't a cuddle ferret and he gets a bit perturbed when I
shower him with affection and even a light hug. He can jump and climb
like some of the Rainbow exotic ferrets in our home - which btw also
have the same body style - though the rainbows don't exhibit as fierce
an attitude. Some believe he is a polecat hybrid. The only history I
have is that I am his 4th home.

My hope for Sully is that he be able to relax, be calm, and enjoy life
in our home and let me take care of issues.
