Subject: [ferrethealth] Regarding Prozac
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

3 months you say? How did you come to that time frame...took that long for the aggression to subside?

Troy Lynn's post sparked us to try prozac here at our Shelter recently. It's been 4 weeks tomorrow since we started several of our critters on it. We have a bunch of different critters on it that all have different stories, but of course our goal is always the same: socialize the anti-social ferret. Some are singles that will not make any other friends, some are now single after losing mates, some live in a pair, a trio or even a group of 6 with success - but NO NEW FRIENDS! Of course the less friends a ferret can make the chances of adoption reduce proportionately...sigh...

I haven't had time to write up the entire story yet, but the prozac has completely socialized one of our guests who has been with us for 3 years! Dana is paired with Agnes and even up until 6 weeks ago she would attack any ferret she could get her claws into. She is currently napping with her new friend Jason. :) Potential from 6 others (still making introductions), and for the other 6 I was about to give up. So please tell me more about this time frame so I can make a good guess as to how long I should keep trying - and thanks!

About 5 years ago I had a good reason for trying Prozac on two

ferrets who were littermates. ......... ........with beautiful bodies

and stinko personalities. Of all my fuzzies, only these two would

try to bite me at any opportunity. I had them on the following

protocol given by Dr. Jerry Murray at the time and I have to say, it

worked VERY well. It takes at least 3 months to kick in, so the

person who gave it for 2 weeks didn't give it an opportunity to

work. Here is his recipe: (I had it compounded with a bubblegum

flavor and they had no problem accepting it) Gail

Yep the dose would be 1 mg/kg once a day orally.

If the generic version is 4mg/ml then the 3 pound ferret would

need 0.35mls and the 1.5 pounder would need 0.17mls.

The brand name liquid is a God awful tasting chocolate-

mint flavor. I am not sure about the generic version's

flavor, but you might want to check on that. A compounding

pharmacy can make a chicken or bubble gum flavor version

from the tablets. Again make sure the aggressive behavior is

not adrenal related before trying Prozac.
