Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Bloated Abdomen
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

John, recently I was away from home (and my vet) with my ferrets when
one of them became very distended and bloated looking. He is 8+ years
and I thought he was going to die. He was walking around moaning and
could not get comfy. A vet I had never before met came by the next day
and agreed to look at my boy. She commented that he did look bloated,
but unless he had severe IBD (Irritable bowel disease), he probably
would not be gassy.

Wall, he DOES have IBD. And, I HAD begun a new batch of Carnivore Care
that day, which the mfr. later told me was a slightly different mix
than usual. Apparently his IBD is severe enough that it only takes a
small change for him to react. He has not had any more difficulties
now that I know this, as I can control the food. His poops are also
occasionally as you describe, but now are usually normal. Jersey stays
on the Carnivore Care and a/d diet, which keeps him comfortable when
he is awake. I use the Totally Ferret venison-turkey-lamb kibble to
avoid the chicken.

You should also ask your vet about the pediatric mylicon drops. I know
of several people who use them. I have used the adult version on me
and can attest to the increased comfort level almost immediately.
Please let us know what you find.
