Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Safest lotion to use for an adrenal ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
We personally put on a very plain, inexpensive store brand olive oil when a ferret has dried
skin.
Olive oil has been used for cleansing and moisturizing for thousands of years and it is
safely edible for ferrets just as it is for us humans.
Of course, the first thing is to effectively treat the adrenal disease as well as possible:
surgery when possible, and when not then Lupron Depot and melatonin implants, or is
countries where deslorelin depots are sold that and perhaps melatonin implant if the latter
can be gotten.
There are also meds for some of the more serious side effects.
With adrenal disease the most fair thing for the ferret is to tackle the underlying cause
instead of just the symptoms but that is sometimes forgotten.
Finally: melatonin can regrow fur from a dermal effect, too, so there might be some
helpful fur regrowth (but the regrowth should never be taken as an measurement of effect
on the adrenal gland since there are those two routes taken).
