Another thing to remember is that the virulence of tumor types
varies among species -- which flies in the face of the individual
quoted who is familiar specifically with human medicine rather
than with inter-species differences.

People here will immediately think of several examples, with
perhaps the one most often noticed is that mast cells tumors
are virtually always benign in ferrets (although there is one
internal mast cell tumor exception) despite being very
aggressive tumors in some other species. So, in ferrets mast
cell tumors can virtually always be considered benign even though
they are very malignant in some other species, even among others
in Carnivora. As Dr. Williams so often reminds us: "A ferret is not a
dog or a cat."

One statement in the news story discounted the possibility of
benign sarcomas yet resources such as the study below discredit that
blanket statement (though I do not know in which species or how
many species):

Genetics of soft tissue tumors.

Sarcomas form a highly diverse group of rare tumors that are
derived from connective tissue. More than 100 different malignant
and benign soft tissue neoplasms can be recognized by histologic
examination. Few diagnostic markers exist, and the cell of origin
for many soft tissue tumors is unknown. The accurate diagnosis
of many of these tumors therefore remains a challenge. The study
of sarcomas has yielded many insights that can be applied to other
neoplasms such as carcinoma. For example, the success of the
treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor with Imatinib has led to
an increased effort to find targeted therapies for other malignancies.
Here we describe the known molecular changes in a number of
sarcomas and focus on novel scientific approaches that can be
expected to lead to improved diagnosis, prognostication, and
therapy of sarcoma.

END QUOTED ABSTRACT

On Pubmed 23 articles come up when

sarcoma ferret

are the search terms. Interestingly, mast cell tumors articles
are included among them. I wonder if ferret mast cell tumors
are among the sarcoma types which happen to be benign.
