Subject: [ferrethealth] TIPS: ways to more easily use Yahoogroups
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

CHANGING ADDRESSES ON YAHOOGROUPS: First send a blank mail from your
NEW address to the automatic SUBSCRIBING address then Yahoogroups just
automatically removes. No reason to say a thing because no one ever
sees them.

Send a blank mail from your OLD address to the automatic UNsubscribing
address then Yahoogroups just automatically removes. No reason to say
a thing because no one ever sees them.

It is not too unusual for people to not know how those work, so I wish
that Yahoogroups would include a short few lines explaining that. Too
often people think a person is at the other end and send a note from a
new address asking to unsubscribe an old address, but since those are
automated addresses that just unsubscribes the new address.

Those addresses are at the base of the FHL home page where you will find

If you have already gotten rid of your old address, please, remind me
so that I can remove your address then manually, which will save me 2
weeks of sending daily "please, reactivate" notes (which does add up
to be a lot of work).

That gets into another topic: WHEN YOU BOUNCE Because so many mail
programs or servers spontaneously begin bouncing group mails such as
things from Yahoogroups, and because in the last two years there have
been several ISPs which at time INCORRECTLY send notes that certain
people do not have addresses with them we not only send almost daily
reminders through Yahoogroups when people bounce, but I also send some
from my own address because sometimes my own notes get through when
ISPs or mail programs are not letting group mail through. That extra
kindness to protect members adds up in time, and each of us FHL
moderators has her or his own life with great responsibilities so WHEN
PEOPLE WILL BE AWAY AND SET THEIR MAIL TO "SUSPEND", could you,
please, please, please just change your FHL setting to "read on web
only" during the time that you are gone. More and more people are
using the "suspend" setting these days now that some ISPs have that
when they have family or work travel but then each of you winds up in
the bouncing list, creating a daily chore which could be easily
avoided by that one simple kindness of changing yourself to "read on
web only" while away, please.

After two weeks of bounces addresses are removed. That is simply
because after that length of time the addresses are virtually always
ones that no longer exist but were not removed.

Obviously, that is a situation where on a rare basis a real address
will be removed. In that case the person can just rejoin; it is that
simple.

Some people have ISPs which cause a lot of bounces due to mismatches
with Yahoogroups. It is kind of silly for an ISP to have a major
software mismatch with a major website host, but it does happen.
Those people can try a piggyback account such a gmail one, or can use
the "read on web" setting and just get the FHL there.

GETTING TOO MUCH MAIL? A number of members do not realize that there
are multiple settings you can select using your "my groups" section at
Yahoogroups. Just look above the banner on the home page of any
Yahoogroup to which you belong and click open "My Groups". You can
set yourself to digests or other options.

USING THE WEBSITE: Using Yahoogroups websites is easy for everything
except searches. Luckily, the FHL has its own separate archives. In
fact, those archives have over 6 and 1/2 years of information which
can help you, not only information from our current Yahoogroups
location, but info from our past ones at Smartgroups and at
Yahoogroups. (The old Yahoogroups address was taken by someone else
after we gave it up.)

Okay, to use the website first go to
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ferrethealth/

Notice your choices in the menu on your left. We have photos (ferret
health photos ONLY so that the album section is not full when someone
needs it for a health problem), we have extremely helpful links, and
we have very useful files. Notice the "messages" choice. I'll come
back to that in a second.

By the photo look at the write up and see that there are live links
there to the FHL Archives which are very easy to use. Click on any of
those and feel free to give the archives a whirl.

The archives have a live link right back to the FHL so you can come
back that way easily.

Scroll down on the homepage. Notice the addresses and URL at the
bottom of the page. Those are handy to have.

Let's go back to that menu on your left. If you are ever unsure of
the FHL Rules (beyond the legal things we all just have to follow like
not violating copyrights) just go to the Files section.

Also in that menu on your left at the homepage is "messages". Click
that open. You have options. You can read an entire subject which is
connected from having the same subject title, or you can read
individual messages. Let's say you want to read by subject. Just go
to messages and you will see in blue print "Group by topic" and click
that. Then just use "expand" to open the messages to read them.

When you want to return to reading by individual messages just click
"List as individual messages."

Now as you know, direct messages like sympathy messages that don't
include new info need to be sent directly to posters. The individual
messages have ways to do that, either by copying and pasting the
addresses or by clinking on the live links and thereby using the
commands associated with the posts. On the website it will feel a
little confusing at first. Hit "reply". You will get a posting box
in which you can write and in which the post to which you are replying
is included. NOW, USE THE SCROLL BAR AT THE "TO" LINE. Notice that
you have three options. You can send a mail about that message to the
entire list, or you can scroll down and send one to the message author
directly, or you can send one to us moderators. No matter which you
select once it is sent the site will say it has "posted". That is a
design choice i wish Yahoogroups would change, but that is the way it
is so don't let that worry you.

Finally, we have some members whose messages wind up with line length
problems. That seems to be some sort of software mismatch, and it can
be annoying. If you keep your lines about 1/4 shorter than the
writing box allows that will correct that, but I think everyone
understands when someone is short on time and the problem occurs. At
least, I hope they do because it happens to me, too.
