Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal disease or vigourous winter shedding?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi!

I have a sprite just 2 years old and she is losing handfuls of hair -
no bald spots anywhere. No other signs of adrenal disease e.g.,
swollen vulva, etc.

I know hair loss can be a sign of adrenal disease. I got her from a
shelter in April so don't know what her previous pattern of winter
shedding was like. I don't want to over-react and assume its early
adrenal disease.

What is the best test to confirm adrenal disease (besides exploratory
surgery)? Unfortunately, we do not have ultra-sound testing available
for ferrets in this province. If necessary I will take her out of
province for an ultra-sound, may have to take her to U.S. for this.
However, wondering how accurate blood work is to confirm adrenal disease?

What are the normal hormonal ranges and what might be indicative of
adrenal involvement?

Many thanks!

Tressie
