Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Question on timing of light cycle
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Just remember that ferrets do need light during the day. It should mimic the natural light cycles. The benefit of light therapy is not so much that they are kept in the dark all the time, but that the hours of light and dark match up with the natural light cycle of the sun all year-round. Makes it a challenge in the winter, when it is dark longer and us humans have to work so we don't get home to play with them in daylight.
I keep my ferret room dark during natural darkness, except for maybe 10 or 15 minutes later in the evening when I feed them and switch who is in and who is out. I also make sure that caged or not, they have a dark den to sleep in with absolutely no light. (Mine like the back of the closet).
They certainly do seem to be happier and healthier with the addition of dark dens and natural lighting.
Oh, they don't need a nightlight - so you might as well save the cost of electricity and turn off your light. :-)

supposedly more similar to how they'd live outside.
