LOL.. Clover I believe the gas expelled is methane gas from the breakdown of food and yes prolonged exposure in a concentrated form could do damage, but getting poofed in the face is probably not going to hurt them.
I would image they cough and sputter for the same reason we do if someone decides to pass gas right in our faces.. It stinks..
