GREAT set of questions! If memory serves, I have heard in
the past from Dr. Tom Willard, whose doctorate is in
veterinary nutrition, esp. of members of Carnivora that the
need for D in ferret diets is thought to be lower than for
humans just as it is lower for dogs. In fact, dogs can get
a form of hypercalcemia from too much D in their diets, and
they are longer adjusted to living w humans -- not that this
necessarily means a lot for ferrets since rates of selection
pressures and more natural forms of evolution can vary
among species (and it is postulated even within sequential
species in one line over time, including a recent study on
rates of change in the human lineage. Still, it leaves the door
open on if there is such a thing as too much D for ferrets, just
as for us humans there can be too much A (which appears to
be substantially less of a concern for ferrets.
