Subject: [ferrethealth] subcutaneous fluid dosage
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I have an approximately three year old female sable Marshall Farms
ferret (rescue) who presented about three weeks ago with a head tilt.
We treated her with enrofloxacin orally and amoxicillin and she seemed
to act normal after a week or two. A couple of days ago, she started
tilting slightly, and last night she started having more serious signs
- unable to maintain body temperature, falling over when set down on
her feet.
I dropped her off with my vet today and she thinks that it's either a
really bad inner ear infection or something really bad like a brain
tumor. We're giving enrofloxacin subcutaneously this time, since the
taste is terrible and i don't have time to have it compounded, plus
amoxicillin orally. I'm also supposed to give her subcutaneous fluids,
but my vet neglected to tell me what the correct amount to give is. I
know it's not an exact science, but does anyone have a guideline for
me?
She is taking some KMR mixed with Fortiflora probiotics and seems to
be perking up a bit. I just don't want to underdose on the fluids and
slow down her recovery.
Thanks
Becky
