Subject: [ferrethealth] Question about mysterious skin affliction on DMK kid after spaying
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a Ohio Rescue female estimated to be aged around one. After
she was spayed, her wound didn't heal in a timely fashion. She
developed several small 1/4 inch plus sized rough red splotches all
near the area. The only reason we could see them right away was
because she was shaved. OTC triple antibiotic ointment did nothing.
Trypzyme-V application resulted in an immediate positive reaction and
the lesions dramitically improved within 48 hours. Ferret recovered
instantly. Now, two weeks later, I notice on top of her neck another
similar spot only because it started to loose hair. I assumed it
might be the beginnings of a mast cell tumor. This past week this
area doubled. Rough guess is that it may now be over half an inch in
length. As of last week, it also seemed to have a less affected
middle area. Almost like an assymetrical ring. It does NOT itch (and
neither did the previous lesions). This ferret was tested for
Ringworm during the first eruption by her surgical area and was
negative. Her feces were examined days ago and she was cleared of
any parasites, etc. Last night I began benedryl and the medication
that rid us of original lesions.

Detailed photos have been uploaded on the photo site in an album.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? This ferret was very
severely affected by the rescue and I'm trying to keep her from a vet
visit if possible just for now. I'm just concerned that although she
got rid of the first lesions and although they seemed simliar that
this returned and in a diff area. Is this systemic or something? Or
is this just something completely unrelated?

No other ferrets she is housed with has anything wrong. This ferret
is on a turkey based diet with no treats other than ferretone. She
is in a ferret safe room with limited exposure to household things.
She had distemper and rabies vaccines near around Oct 20th.
