Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret with FIP?? Please help
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello I am new to the group and am desperately seeking answers about
my sick ferret Booda. Booda is a nine month old ferret and is very
ill. Booda is being treated by a team of three exotic specialists
and his pathologists also specializes in exotics. However, no one
has ever seen a case like Boodas. If anyone has any input to offer
or know of someone that can help please let me know. Here is
Booda's story:
I purchased booda in March of 2007 and things were great until May
2007. Booda was acting very lethargic and I took him to the vet.
His vet could feel something weird with his abdomen but couldn't
make anything out from the X-rays. After performing exploratory
surgery, she found that his spleen was covered in nodules and he was
very inflammed. She suspected juvenile lymphosarcoma. The
pathologist however said that it was not lymphoscarcoma and said
that it resembled FIP. We treated Booda with antibiotics and
prednisone hoping to clear up the infection. Booda did not make a
full recovery and in November (after many trips to the vet) his
spleen became huge and we opted to have that removed. The spleen
was about 4-5 inches long and it's removal caused Booda to
immediately lose over 100 grams!!! At the time that the spleen was
removed the vet also noticed that parts of his intestine also had
nodules on it. Samples were sent out and again any kind of cancer
was ruled. However the results again pointed to feline infectious
peritonitis. At this point in time Booda is on an antibiotic and
prednisone again and we are running an aluetian test and also a
viral isolation test (we are still looking for a lab to run the
isolation test). Booda has not improved since having the spleen out
or since we started him on the medication. I know that Booda
doesn't have much time left and I am desperately looking for any
help or answers that I can get. I hope that this post will somehow
reach Dr. Bruce Williams or another specialist who would be willing
to consult with my vet. Thank you for any help or input
