Not responding directly to the question of anaesthesia but to the
culture of clinical practice in general.

Unless a veterinarian or a physician, for that matter, is affiliated
with a teaching hospital, he or she simply does not have time to be
current on the latest evidence-based medicine, including treatment
choices. It takes a while for clinicians in the field to come on
board with what is being taught in the medical/veterinary schools.

If you are looking for what is the most current, then look to what is
being taught and not what is being practiced in the field. However,
that does not mean that what a veterinarian is doing is not the best
standard clinical practice - it just may not be the most current based
on recent clinical trials and other scientific research.

I do the research, because I am a researcher by profession and have
the time, and I present the findings to my veterinarian who typically
works 14 - 16 hour days. Then we come up with a treatment plan that
is best for my ferrets.
