Our own experience with those we have had how had glands has
been that if they "poofed" often or particularly badly they tended
to have anal sac infections. Otherwise, it took truly extreme
circumstances for them to do this.

So, perhaps some of the ones recently spoke about might be either
genetically more inclined to poofing easily and badly, or may have
simply had such a rough start that their behavior will change with time
and security. BUT -- just but -- maybe some of them have anal sac
problems like infections.

BTW, I learned an interesting things from Dr. Bruce Williams last
year. It didn't apply to the ferret, but was among the possibilities
that we had to consider. She had an abscess which began as a
boil-like infection on her lower abdomen, and Dr. Williams alerted
Steve and me to the possibility that such abscesses can sometimes
indicate an infected anal gland. HUH? Well, it turns out to make
complete sense. In trying to drain the anal sacs sometimes form a
fistula in the direction of gravity -- which for a ferret means that
the drainage can happen right there. Interesting!
