Subject: [ferrethealth] Biodor use
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I searched the archives already, but did not find the answer to my
question, so I'll try this. Is BiOdor safe to use for ferrets?
Being the curious person I am, I wanted to see what effect BiOdor has
on my ferrets drinking water. Using an 8 oz sample of regular tap
water I would normally give my fuzzies, I used my swimming pool test
strips to see what would happen, if anything. My water without BiOdor
was already very alkaline with a ph of about 7.8. I squirted 1 1/2
pumps of BiOdor into the water sample and tested again with no
obvious change. By the time I had added 4 1/2 pumps to the water the
ph level had dropped to 6.8. (The directions for use call for 3-5
pumps/16 oz of water).
Obviously this is not a scientific test, but here is my question.
Does BiOdor reduce the ph in the ferrets urine as well? If it does,
is this safe?
I have a teenage son who has cancer, so have been doing quite a bit
of reading on the subject. There are theories that acidic water may
contribute to increased risk of cancer. If there is any validity to
this theory, might we be risking our ferrets health by increasing the
acidity in their water for the sake of reducing waste odors? I don't
know if they need the same urine ph level humans do.
Thanks for the input.
