Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Strange question about poof
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone. I've been reading all of the posts on poofing, and I
just have to weigh in.I have 5 ferrets with their scent glands intact.
There seems to be some confusion on this board between poofing and
spraying. To me, anyway, there is a huge difference. My ferrets will
poof..a small burst of odor, when excited or rough-housing..this seems
to happen much more frequently when they're young..when they mature, it
is rare..with mine, anyway.
Spraying, on the other hand is an all out assault to my
senses..literally enough to make me gag..it is an oily residue that is
aimed at whoever or whatever frightened the ferret.i have only seen a
ferret truly spray twice in 10 years..two different ferrets. When one
of my ferrets sprayed another who was bullying him years ago..the
ferret that got sprayed kept shaking his head and looking like he was
dizzy..it really threw him for a loop, but it didn't harm him, and he
stopped being a bully.
If a ferret is frightened enough to spray, in my mind..you should be
working on fixing that problem, rather than descenting the ferret.
Ferrets seem to use it as a last resort, and it will be life saving if
that ferret ever gets out and meets a neighborhood dog.
Ferrets with their arsenal intact, seem to know how to control it,
and use it sparingly..so please try to understand the ferret before
opting for surgery. donna
