Subject: Re: [ferrethealth]Possibly Sick Ferret - need advice - UPDATE
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Off to the vet we went with Gonzo this evening. After
examining him, our vet told us she could hear a heart
murmur on the left side. Xrays were taken of his
chest, but the radiologist doesn't come in until
Monday. The vet did look at the xrays with us and in
her opinion, the heart is slightly enlarged. She also
felt there was little to no fluid build up in the
lungs. She wouldn't confirm a specific diagnosis, but
said that everything is pointing to some type of heart
disease. As she has never heard a murmur in a ferret,
she asked us to bring Zo back to see the other vet in
the office on Monday. In the meantime, she prescribed
Lasix. We got him home, fed him and gave him his
first dose of the medicine. Less than 5 minutes after
giving him the meds, our vet called. They gave us the
wrong medication. We were supposed to have Lasix, but
got enalipril. She insisted on driving the correct
medication to us (we live 30 min away). She just left
a few minutes ago, but she took Gonzo with her.
Apparently the dose of enalipril given is twice what a
normal dose would be for his weight. There is concern
that he will have low blood pressure tonight, so she
took him to her house for the evening in order to
monitor him and give fluids if necessary. She
consulted with another ferret vet and she assured us
there was no need to induce vomiting due to the
overdose and that chances are good that Zo will be
absolutely fine. I'm having a hard time wrapping my
head around this one, but we'll just have to wait and
see what tomorrow brings. The second opinion about
the murmur will now be tomorrow since our vet took
Gonzo with her.

Again, thanks to everyone for the advice. Clearly, I
was right to be worried and I might not have acted as
quickly as I did if I hadn't gotten such good advice
from this list. Once we have a firm diagnosis, I will
post again.

Thanks,
Michelle
