Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Totally Ferret Hypoallergenic food & EGE
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a two year old female that I believe has a chicken allergy
and/or IBS/IBD/EGE, etc...She was losing weight and had chronic bird
seed looking stool. At that time she was being fed Innova Evo Cat. She
has never had a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis. She is now on 0.4cc of
1mg/mL prednisolone twice daily, which she gets mixed with gerber
turkey with turkey gravy (~1.5tbsp each feeding). She loves it! For
her main diet, I give her a small amount of the totally ferret
hypoallergenic food, which she munches on sparingly. Her main source
of fat and protein comes from the Wysong Archetypal diet (aka Wysong
Ferret Archetypal-1) and Wysong's Dream Treats in beef. I should note
that the archetypal diet does contain chicken and beef, but I pick the
large peices of chicken out, so she only gets VERY small amounts of
it. Wysong diets are cold-processed, whole meats (meat, organs, bones,
everything). My little one LOVES this stuff. Her coat is now
beautiful, she has gained her weight back, and I hardly ever see
bird-seed in her stool (once and a great while I see a tiny bit, which
I contribute to the chicken in the archetypal that I miss). I have
considered the other types of Evo, but all Innova foods use potatoes
as one of the top 5 ingredients, which is quite high on the glycemic
index. So, if you want to avoid grains to potentially help alleviate
stress on the pancrease (and eventually insulinoma) that potatoes
should be just as bad to deal with. That's my feeling anyway, based on
research I have done, and conversations I have had with ferrets owners
and veterinarians. I highly recommend the Wysong diet. It is
expensive, but not much more that high quality ferret food in the
stores. http://www.wysong.net/page/WOTTPWS/CTGY/FERR
