Subject: [ferrethealth] pet food recalls
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

The wheat gluten from the Chinese source connected to the pet food recalls is being
further traced both in the pet foods stream and possibly the human foods one (though I
have not read of any cases found yet where it was used in human food I has read that the
FDA is working overtime carefully checking that, too).

In a new AP article:

BEGIN QUOTE

Nestle Purina PetCare Co. said it was recalling all sizes and varieties of its Alpo Prime Cuts
in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. Purina said a limited amount of the food
contained a contaminated wheat gluten from China.

The same U.S. supplier also provided wheat gluten, a protein source, to a Canadian
company...

so follow the news because more brands can be announced over time.

There are problems. No one knows for sure WHAT is causing the kidney damage. The
levels of two compounds found have been low in tested gluten, foods, and deceased
animals, but perhaps they can have a multiplicative effect, or maybe something else is
going on.

If you read of further recalls DO include the governmental, news, or food company URLs
that verify, PLEASE, because there will likely be some false rumors until this is better
understood.
