Subject: [ferrethealth] Blood Glucose checking question
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Hi everyone, I have a questions regarding the blood glucose tests that the vets do at their offices.

My 4 1/2 yo male, River, was diagnosed insulonomic at the beginning of February. His results came back as 58. We are currently doing a chemo protocal on him, where he gets his chemo every 3 wks, along with blood tests. His next test on 3/8 came back as 86 - and also around that time I could see a huge improvement in him activity-wise. And it (his activity level) has been the same (great) since then.

Now yesterday 3/30, I brought him in for his 3rd treatment. They tested his BG again, but this time they're telling me it came back at 41. They ran the test twice. On all the tests, he had eaten about 3 to 4 hours prior to the test.

His regular vet is out, so another is covering for him. Now, I know if you let the drawn blood sit in the lab, the insulin will continue to 'eat' the glucose (or something like that, cant remember exactly how it was worded, but that it would affect the results). Like I said, all tests were done within 3 to 4 hrs of him eating. His activity level is still great - it just cant be possible that he's a 41.

Are there different ways of testing, like for a cat or dog BG level vs. testing a ferret? Or another way the tests couldve been screwed up? He's being retested again on Monday, but in the meantime if anyone knows anything, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Andrea
