Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret with Insulinoma... question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

A gal I've been trying to help over the last few months (some of you may
remember my posting about her) with her fuzzies (one died before he got pred
for his insulinoma) is having trouble again.

She wrote me basically saying that the fuzzy is refusing to eat, take his
pred, won't even take ferretone. Her last statement following that was "I
think he's ready to cross the rainbow bridge."

I'm hoping this is not the case. I've no experience with ferrets with this
illness, so I'm asking you guys if you can give me some advice to pass on to
her???

I have strongly encouraged her call her vet asap...and told her she may be
preparing to force feed her little guy a soupy meal (told her that her vet
would tell her which was best) by feeding syringe.

Is there anything else I can pass on to her that will help this fuzzy? Is
this the normal progression of this disease?? I don't know exactly how long
he had insulinoma before he got so sick she was forced to take him to the
vet, but....it's only been a couple of months since beginning his pred, etc.

Any advice I could pass on to her would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Ella

[Moderator's suggestion: It is true that the med doses
need ot be adjusted over the course of the disease, but
some more details would help:
What meds are being given?
If Pred then Prednisone or Prednisolone?
How often are they given?
What level of meds? If you give ml or cc then you have
to also give concentration (mg/ml) so that the dose can
be figured out. Knowing the approximate weight of the
animal is also highly helpful.
Has finger feeding been tried? (Definitely leave syringe
feeding for a last ditch effort and if it is to be tried then
it needs to be taught hands on a the treating vet or vet
tech because it does pose the risk of inhalation pneumonia.)
Other symptoms?

Basically, more details are really needed to advise best.]
