Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Blood Glucose checking question
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

One of my ferrets had his blood drawn for bloodwork which my vet does
annually after age 3. They sent the sample to an outside lab and the
glucose reading came back really low (don't recall exact number). The
vet had me fast him for 4 hours and bring him in, they drew blood
again and did the glucose test inhouse and his value was within the
normal range. I asked her why this could happen and she told me that
if the blood sits for awhile after the draw and the tests aren't run
right away the glucose values can have a false reading that is low. I
don't know if this happened with your ferret but if it did then that
could be why his values were low the first time.

seems that something must have been off with the test on Friday,
because today, he was tested a couple of times (few hrs apart), and
the readings ranged from 85 to 130. The vet agreed that these
readings were more likely correct. I wish I knew what went wrong,
but I'm just happy to have him retested and have the much better
readings!
