Subject: RE: [ferrethealth] ECE prevention, is that possible how long to quarantine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

There is no test for ECE. There are few clues as to whether a kit is infected. The Bright green slimy, VERY smelly poop is the best clue.

A vet visit is always a good idea when you acquire a new pet, but the safest route to protecting your other ferrets from ECE - IF you have any inkling that she may be shedding the virus is to quarantine her to a separate area of the house,
Never wear the same shoes in the quarantine area as you wear elsewhere in the house, Cleanse feet or shoes that have been in the quarantine area (pan of mild bleach solution is good),
Do not hold the kit; then wearing the same clothes go hold another ferret.
DO not allow anyone near the other's area.
DO not let other pets in both areas.

This needs to be kept up until the kit is 8 months old. That is 6 months past the supposed adoption age of 2 months.

Now if she is a Marshall ferret and so are your other ferrets then they all went through distribution centers and have probably all been exposed to ECE already. Path Valley, Canadian and private breeder ferrets may well not have been through a distribution center and thus exposed as a kit to the virus. Tough decision to make.

I'm thankful that I do not keep kits in my rescue, but rather move them to one of many homes I have waiting for kits.

Good luck.

Vicki

[Moderator's Note: PV also uses some distributors as well as direct sales, same as MF. Some smaller places also use distributors, at least in part.
