Fat redistribution to the lower half can happen with adrenal disease (sometimes with the
thorax becoming very skinny at the same time that the abdomen becomes very fat which is
why some people say "fat" and some say "skinny".) There are many ways to tackle that
problem and the info is available in the archives and in recommended links. The fat
redistribution can happen pretty fast.
Ascites (fluid in the abdomen) is usually form heart disease, for example, cardiomyopathy or
heart worms, or can less often happen with kidney disease, liver disease, lymphoma, and
probably some other things like lung disease, I suspect. That will present suddenly and will
be sort of like a water balloon.
Ferrets are very receptive to treatment, so the first step, which you have already said that you
plan to take is a vet visit. Your vet will do an exam, and if concerned will probably take blood
for a CBC and a Chemistry Panel, maybe for a TN Panel (though adrenal disease can usually
be recognized without that and without abdominal imaging -- although individuals vary and
then those tests can help), and very possibly image the chest, esp. the heart, and maybe
image the abdomen if certain diseases are suspected. (If the problem is adrenal those tests
may still be done to know how good a surgical candidate the ferret is.)
