To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Some of the best vet care we have gotten over 26 years with ferrets has been from people
who were learning. Nothing replaces a willingness to learn. The best was from someone
who did an actual exotics specialization at the AMC, followed by people he taught. During
those many years with only two exceptions -- one who was just too close to that vet
emotionally and one with genetic problems who was needed intact for specialized testing
after death -- we allowed all of our ferrets to have necropsies and pathology after death
because our vet was teaching vets and techs about ferrets during the necropsies. There
were some truly excellent vets, though, who were happy to pick up books, look up
resources, and make phone calls when needed. They learned hands on and did
marvelously well. I'd rather a person who wants to constantly learn than someone who
took a small course as part of their original degree but didn't follow-up. Also wonderful
are people who were willing and able to do an actual specialization.

There are excellent vet texts and vet videos out there to teach your vet more and to serve
as references.

Plus, there are excellent websites, many with all or most of their content from ferret vets.
If you go to the links section of the FHL and to my links site (both in my signature lines)
you can provide a LOT of info to your vet.

For ADV I highly suggest that you use the posts and links in them from Danee Devore
which can be found in the FHL Archives. (Again, see my signature lines for that addy, too.)
