Subject: [ferrethealth] PVC' s and Water Bottles
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Reading a report on the health dangers of pvc (polyvinyl chlorides) in
the house including household items and in most of the plastic bottles
of food we purchase prompted my wife and I to check all of our food
items that came in plastic bottles or jars. The little triangle under
the jar or container is the universal recycling container symbol and it
contains a number. The "triangle" with the number 3 inside is reported
to be the most toxic with the potential to cause life threatening
illness. Thankfully none of the food items had a number 3. There were
1s, 2s, 5s,7s. We have 14 ferrets residing in two multilevel cages, one
single level cage and a large pen. The all have multiple water bottles
attached. We we checked the bottom of the bottles we found the triangle
with the dreaded 3. We plan on replacing all of them immediately.
Apparently companies selling food for human consumption are aware of the
dangers of PVC 3 so they do not use it for their items. However, it
seems that the manufacturers of pet products/supplies are not concerned
that our beloved animal friends are drinking water from a toxic
container. I would urge everyone to check the bottom of all your plastic
bottles including those of your ferrets and consider replacing them. I
am outraged that pet suppliers feel they can expose animals to toxic
materials because they don't have a "voice". I don't know if I am
permitted to recommend a website but please take the time to research
the internet to see for yourself.

[Moderators' Note: Yes, expert websites are welcome. We'd hoped to find some with a bibliography and dated updates, but no luck so far. Still, there are ones like these:

http://www.besafenet.com/pvc/

http://www.ecocycle.org/askeco-cycle/2005/0318.cfm

http://www.watoxics.org/homes-and-gardens/fastfacts/fastfacts-pvc#products

and perhaps a member will be able to provide some sites with juried articles or other expert info. BTW, our ferret water bottles had the number 2 instead of 3, so they must vary.]
