I have recently switched to a ferret knowledgeable vet. This vet always adds
a little steroid to her purevax vaccine when she gives the distemper shot. She
says this helps to eliminate reactions. Have you ever heard of this practice.

**If she is actually adding the steroid to the vaccine when she gives it
(mixing it in the same syringe), I would be concerned about that possibly causing
a problem with the vaccine from the mixture. That said, I pretreat pretty
much all my ferret patients who are being vaccinated with a steroid injection
about fifteen minutes before the vaccine itself is given. I do use benadryl
injectable in young ferrets (under a year of age) rather than steroids.

However, as Sukie mentioned, we are working on defining the length of
protection that is actually conferred by the vaccines, in an effort to lengthen the
time between vaccines as a standard rule to two or more years rather than one.
It will take time to have enough data to be able to say that longer durations
of protection occur for sure, though.**
